Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in the face at the Oscars after he made a joke at the expense of Jada Pinkett Smith.
Arguably the most memorable scene from the 2022 Academy Awards was Will Smith slapping Chris Rock in the face after he made a joke at the expense of Jada Pinkett Smith.
Rock said he was looking forward to “GI Jane 2,” referring to Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. It’s no secret that the actress suffers from medically induced hair loss.
Oscars: Chris Rock reportedly didn’t know about Pinkett Smith’s illness
According to an insider close to Rock, the slap must have come as quite a surprise to him. Chris Rock is said not to have known about Pinkett Smith’s illness, the friend explains to “TMZ”. Also, the comedian couldn’t hurt a fly and had no intention of hurting Will Smith’s wife.
Whether that’s true is probably only known by Chris Rock himself. Will Smith has since apologized. Not only at the Academy and all fans of the ceremony, but also at Rock.
Will Smith responded with violence
The feud between the two men goes back further into the past. In 2016, Chris Rock hosted the Oscars, which the Smiths boycotted at the time because of the lack of black nominees. “If Jada boycotts the Oscars, it’s like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,” he joked of Smith’s acting talent. When asked about this, Pinkett Smith was relaxed and above things. “We have a lot of work to do, a lot of things that are happening in our world. We have to move on,” she said of Rock’s jokes at her expense.
Not so this year. There’s no telling what Pinkett Smith would have said after Rock’s joke went awry – the opportunity was taken away from her by her husband, who responded violently.
