Karl Lauterbach: The Minister of Health about his lifestyle

Karl Lauterbach: The Minister of Health about his lifestyle

A documentary shows Karl Lauterbach very privately: The relationship with his mother, his unhealthy vices or his favorite perfume in college.

Karl Lauterbach (59) gave private insights into his life and thinking in the WDR documentary (March 28, ARD media library). The journalist accompanied the health minister on his way to his mother, when eating in a restaurant or when visiting his old elementary school.

The Minister of Health spoke about his own lifestyle during a visit to a restaurant – when he asked the waiter not to use salt when ordering. Since a study in the late 1980s, Lauterbach has completely dispensed with salt: “It’s difficult to keep up and I don’t know many who do it.”

“I want to enjoy life too”

However, Lauterbach also made it clear that his life does not consist of optimizing his health. “I do a lot of things that are not healthy.” For example, he practiced martial arts for years, often injuring himself. He goes to bed late and sleeps too little. And he doesn’t give up wine completely either. Lauterbach: “I want to achieve something with my life, but I also want to enjoy life.”

He also reminisced with Markus Feldenkirchen (46), especially when the journalist put his old perfume on the table. “Aramis Tuscany Pere Uomo”, which accompanied him during his college years. “Incredible. As good as it was then. I didn’t know it was still on the market,” said Lauterbach after the first splash. The official description of the fragrance reads: “Sensual, aromatic fragrance for the passionate man. Character: adventurous.” Lauterbach jokes: “That describes me from back then.” In fact, he associates the scent with good memories from Aachen to Arizona: “I’ve traveled the world and achieved quite a lot. It was a very good time.”

“Too cheeky”: Mother criticizes his appearances

He learned from his father, who has since died, “that the basis, the foundation, of every success is hard work”. He says of his 87-year-old mother that she still watches his talk show appearances and then gives him “recommendations” on what he did wrong. “Mostly these are aspects that affect appearance. But even if I then countered hard, I was said to have been too cheeky.” And he adds, slightly ironically: “You still have to put up with such accusations today.”

Considering the situation in Ukraine, Lauterbach explains that his mother still remembers the Second World War clearly. “Because when she was a child, she experienced a lot that she couldn’t forget for the rest of her life.” She’s afraid of the war, but not for herself, he feels the same way: “She’s afraid for her grandchildren, I’m afraid for my children.”

Schröder “on the verge of being a joke figure”

Feldenkirchen also addresses the SPD politician to Gerhard Schröder (77), who traveled to Moscow at the beginning of March to speak to Vladimir Putin (69). According to Lauterbach, his party colleague was “bordering on a joke figure” for him. He felt sorry for Schröder because he showed his naivety with the performance. “Ashamed of others is a term that comes to mind.”

He used to appreciate him very much, “but that was a long time ago,” says Lauterbach. “Unfortunately, there is nothing left of his former prestige and everything he does now only makes it worse. So it’s really sad. He won’t be remembered as Chancellor but as someone who ended up in the borderline to the ridiculous.”
