Will Smith and Chris Rock: Which stars are on whose side

Will Smith’s slap in the face of comedian Chris Rock at this year’s Oscars still moves Hollywood stars. A few days later it is clear who is on whose side.

When the biggest Hollywood stars in the world come together for the Oscars once a year, it is usually a cozy event where you can hardly keep up with praise for your colleagues. Different this year. Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock in the face for a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. He then raged from the audience that Rock shouldn’t mention his wife’s name again.

Rock had told Pinkett Smith he was looking forward to the second part of GI Jane, referring to the actress’ shaved head. In the first “GI Jane” part, Demi Moore shaved off her hair. In the past, Will Smith’s wife often spoke about suffering from patches of hair loss.

Oscars: Will Smith and the slap on Chris Rock

While everyone in the hall was visibly shocked, more and more stars are now positioning themselves. The interesting thing: There are some on Smith’s side as well as on that of comedian Chris Rock. Comedy colleague Jim Carrey was recently outraged that Smith was celebrated after the slap with a standing ovation for his Oscar. “There’s a massive lack of backbone in Hollywood,” the actor said. And Carrey doesn’t seem to be the only star who thinks so. Filmmaker Judd Apatow said the slap could have ended worse and tweeted that Smith “could have killed” Rock. After much criticism, Apatow deleted the tweet. Mia Farrow also sided with Rock. “It was just a joke. Jokes are what Chris Rock does. He’s always been edgy. It was a harmless joke for him,” she said.

Alec Baldwin also sided with Chris Rock and criticized the Oscars production. “I don’t read much about how or if the producers cared for Chris. But I love you Chris Rock,” he wrote on Instagram.

Oscars presenter Amy Schumer explained her feelings relatively diplomatically in a post that she has since deleted. “I love my friend Chris Rock and think he handled it like a pro. (…) I’m waiting for this disgusting feeling we all have to go away,” she wrote. Zoe Kravitz, on the other hand, posted two photos of herself, to which she wrote: “Here’s a picture of my dress at the awards show where we seem to be attacking people on stage now.” She also received a lot of criticism for her tweet and turned off the comment function.

The slap is also hotly debated on US talk shows. The TV show The View agreed that the scandal could impact other comedians. “Comedians are in danger everywhere,” said comedienne Joy Bahar. “She [die Zuschauer] want us to be edgy, they want us to go out there and say things that other people just think. They want us to take a risk and then they get angry.”

Also approval for the actor

In addition to harsh criticism of Will Smith, the actor also gets approval. Janet Hubert, Smith’s ‘Prince of Bel Air’ co-star said: “There’s only so much you can take and sometimes you have to fight back. Let’s celebrate the win. Nothing else matters. Both actions were wrong, but Chris didn’t have to go that far.”

Actress Tiffany Haddish was downright moved by Will Smith’s outburst of violence. “Seeing a black man stand up for his wife meant so much to me,” she said. Musician Nicki Minaj made it clear that she herself is a fan of Chris Rock and that she blames the producers of the Oscars. She has trouble believing that no one knew about Jada Pinkett Smith’s illness. “You experience in real time what goes on in a man’s soul when he looks over at the woman he loves and sees her holding back tears over a ‘little joke’ at her expense. That’s what every real man feels in that moment. While you all see the joke, he sees her pain,” she wrote on Twitter.

With Denzel Washington, Will Smith has another superstar on his side. Washington was among the first during a commercial break to reassure and comfort Smith. The incident shows that Hollywood, which otherwise seems so homogeneous, does not agree on the slap scandal.
