Patrick Demarchelier is dead: he founded the era of the supermodel

Laetitia Casta, Linda Evangelista or Claudia Schiffer: Patrick Demarchelier had them all in front of his lens in the 90s. With his recordings, he became one of the founders of the supermodel era. He also portrayed Princess Diana. Now the photographer has died at the age of 78.

Hardly anyone has shaped fashion photography over the past 50 years as he has: French-born Patrick Demarchelier has been one of the most important visual artists in this field since the 1970s. He worked with almost all supermodels. His portraits of Princess Diana were also influential.

Demarchelier has passed away at the age of 78. The photographer was born in France in 1943, in the middle of the Second World War. He grew up in the port city of Le Havre with his mother and four brothers. For his 17th birthday in 1960 he was given his first Kodak camera – it was the cornerstone of his later world career. Demarchelier was still drawn to Paris during the 1960s, but that was only a stopover: he left his homeland in 1975 and emigrated to New York.

There he discovered his interest in fashion photography and over the next few decades worked for almost all major fashion magazines, including “Elle”, “Marie Claire”, “Glamour” and “Vogue”. In addition, the Frenchman designed advertising campaigns for fashion companies such as Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Lacoste, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and H&M.

Early on he relied on models like Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista or Naomi Campbell, which earned him the reputation of being the co-founder of the supermodel era. Demarchelier was also influential in another area: in 1989, Demarchelier was the first non-British photographer to be allowed to portray a member of the British royal family: his black and white shot of Princess Diana in a white strapless dress with a tiara became world famous.

A February 2018 report by the , cast a heavy shadow over his illustrious career: More than 50 male and female models made serious allegations against fashion photographers, including Demarchelier. The Frenchman denied all allegations – but he has avoided the public since then.

Now it’s getting even quieter about the great fashion photographer: Patrick Demarchelier passed away on March 31. He leaves behind three sons – Gustaf, Arthur and Victor – and three grandchildren.
