Organic wines: in two years their consumption grew 5000% in Argentina

The figures show the growing public interest in consuming more sustainable wines and reflect the boom in the sector. In this regard, the journalist Pancho Barreiro, co-founder of VIOS | More Sustainable Wines, he considered that “In recent years there has been a significant growth in the number of organic producers and in the interest of wineries in carrying out more sustainable work and having among their wines, even if it is, a wine with organic certification.”

The numbers speak for themselves. In addition to the notorious growth in consumption, the sector exported 10 million liters of certified organic wines during 2020. Currently, 2.5% of wine production corresponds to organic varieties, with Organic Malbec being the most planted and consumed.

The production of organic wines in Argentina

  • The total internal consumption of organic wines in 2020 was 167,125 litres, with a growth of more than 5,000% compared to 2018 (2,970 litres).
  • Organic Malbec is the most widely planted and consumed variety.
  • In 2020, more than 10 million liters of certified organic wines were exported.
  • Compared to 2019, wine exports grew by 24% (almost 3 million liters).
  • In Argentina, 2.5% of wine production is organic.
  • Mendoza is the province that has the largest area of ​​certified organic vine crops with 7,300 certified hectares.
  • There are 250 producers grouped in 79 wineries, of which 69 export.
  • The European Union continues to be the main destination with 64%, followed by the United Kingdom (14%), Switzerland (3%) and Japan (2%).
  • Within the EU, Denmark and Sweden import more than 4.5 million litres. Which means that between the two countries they account for almost 50% of the international consumption of Argentine organic wines.
  • The United Kingdom represents 14% of national organic wine exports with a total of 1,496,751 litres.
  • In the last two years, in Canada and Germany there was a strong growth in exports with figures that exceed 500,000 liters in each destination.

Within the framework of the month of Malbec, the third edition of Positive Malbec Night arrives, an event that brings together the great Argentine Malbecs in which organic, biodynamic, sustainable and fair trade wines will be presented. The proposal, organized by VIOS, Comes Well! and Buenos Aires Marriott, will take place next Tuesday, April 12, in the exclusive deck of the distinguished hotel in the City of Buenos Aires.

As explained by the organization of the event, the tickets include free tasting of organic wines and can be purchased through the event platform, with the possibility of accessing a 30% discount when purchasing them in advance. The non-discounted cost is $3,500.
