A spokeswoman for Obamas announced on Wednesday that the outdoor celebration was planned months ago, taking into account all official Covid requirements. In view of the spread of the Delta variant in the past week, however, the Obamas have now decided to make the festival much smaller and only celebrate with family members and close friends.
US media had previously reported that Obama had planned to hold a big party with hundreds of guests on Martha’s Vineyard over the weekend. The White House was also confronted with inquiries as to whether Obama would not send the wrong signal with a big festival in times of increasing corona infections in the USA.
