After the slap scandal: jazz legend Herbie Hancock in a dilemma

Jazz legend Herbie Hancock (81) is currently in a quandary. He is friends with both Chris Rock (57) and Will Smith (53). Smith slapped the comedian at the Oscars last Sunday and caused a scandal. Rock had previously cracked a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett (50). Hancock now speaks of an “unfortunate situation”. The musician didn’t want to be “in the middle”.

Hancock has not contacted either of his friends after the incident. After Will Smith’s slap in the face, he explained that there was “not one way” in this decision, but “several”. “He could have just left but he made that decision and I guess he’s going to have to live with the consequences,” the 81-year-old said of Smith.

Herbie Hancock stressed that both Smith and Rock are his “friends” and will not side with them. “I’m not going to favor anyone,” he explained. The musician promised to be there for both men equally.

Will Smith ‘heartbroken’ after slapping scandal

Less than an hour after the slap, Will Smith had delivered a tearful acceptance speech on stage at the awards ceremony. He accepted the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in “King Richard.” The Oscar Academy has now initiated disciplinary proceedings against the actor.

In a statement Friday, the actor said he was “heartbroken.” Smith announced his retirement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He also wants to accept all consequences for his behavior during the ceremony last Sunday.

“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my closest friends and loved ones, everyone present and the global audience back home.” according to Smith. “I betrayed the Academy’s trust. I deprived other nominees and winners of an opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. My heart is broken.”
