The federal government has appointed a representative to deal with the abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. But in the opinion of the Trier bishops, this position must be more present.
The office of the Federal Government’s Independent Commissioner for Issues of Child Sexual Abuse (UBSKM) needs to be strengthened, according to Bishop Stephan Ackermann of Trier.
“On the political level, an institution is needed that is explicitly committed to protecting children and young people against sexual violence,” said Ackermann, the German Bishops ‘Conference (DBK)’ s representative for questions of sexual abuse at the German press agency in Trier.
Institutions like the Catholic Church should not be released from their own responsibility when dealing with abuse. But an authority is needed that defines standards for processing processes and also monitors compliance, ”said Ackermann. “That is why it would be an important, yes, necessary sign of politics if the office of the Independent Commissioner was permanently enshrined in law and appropriately equipped for its tasks.”
This includes that the UBSKM has to report regularly to parliament and that the parliamentary groups of the parties represented in the Bundestag deal with this issue. Johannes-Wilhelm Rörig has been in the office of UBSKM since December 2011.
