Guitarist Campbell Diamond presented himself to the Linz audience for the first time on Friday in the Theater Tribüne. Born in Australia, he has been a professor at the Bruckner Private University since the fall. He is one of the most impressive guitarists of our time and has mostly won more than 30 competitions – most recently with three prizes at the 2019 International Guitar Competition in Vienna.

His program led through the core areas of the guitar repertoire, starting with Francisco de Asís Tárrega y Eixea, the founder of the new Spanish guitar school, through French literature by Darius Milhaud and the tonally attractive “Saturnal” from “Cadran Lunaire” by Maurice Ohana to the classical concertino à la Rossini by Johann Kaspar Mertz. With three works by Regino Sáinz de la Maza y Ruiz, there was a homage to one of the most important Spanish guitarists of the 20th century. The finale was a fine selection of Brazilian literature.

Campbell Diamond interpreted the pieces with the intention of eliciting orchestral colors from the guitar, finely savoring polyphonic line play and, apart from the unshakably perfect technique, dedicating himself entirely to the emotional statement of the works. The fact that the Bruckner University in Linz has found a fantastic teacher is also shown by the skilfully presented supporting program by his student Lorenz Polifke.
