The court determined that the successful director violated copyright by taking key elements from the documentary “All Winners All Losers”from Azadeh Masihzadehwithout giving him credit.
The decision of the Court based in Tehran regarding the existence of plagiarism cannot be appealed and now a second judge will evaluate what penalty will be imposed on the director, a measure that Farhadi will be able to dispute in another instance, reported the specialized Hollywood media.
Farhadi’s lawyer, KavehRadwrote on his Instagram account that the litigation investigator had rejected Masihzadeh’s request to share in the film’s profits in case the director was found guilty.
The film premiered last year at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize, in addition to accumulating $2.5 million at the box office worldwide.
Farhadi had admitted that his film was based on the same true story as his documentary workshop student’s project, but the director did not credit Masihzadeh for the idea, claiming that he had done his own research. .
Both stories follow a man who is released from debtors’ prison and finds a bag full of gold coins which he decides to try to return to its owner.
Farhadi initially sued Masihzadeh for defamation and her former student countersued for plagiarism.
Farhadi won two Oscars for Best Foreign Film in 2011 and 2016 for “The Separation” and “The Salesman”respectively.
