Will Smith’s freak out at the Oscars is spreading: now the first voices are being heard calling for the actor to be deprived of his film award.
Even ten days after the scandal at the 94th Academy Awards, the Will Smith debate is still ongoing. Several film projects are currently on hold. Netflix and Sony Pictures, among others, have stopped ongoing projects. In addition, the actor has already resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and has ruefully asked for forgiveness.
But he couldn’t stop the discussion about himself: More and more celebrities are speaking up and condemning the action of the 53-year-old: Will Smith stormed onto the stage of the Dolby Theater during the Oscars on March 27 and had the Comedian Chris Rock slapped in the face in front of an audience of millions. This had previously made a joke about the shaved head of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from circular hair loss.
Last weekend, Amy Schumer, one of the presenters of the Oscars, already described her impressions of the incident: “It was just a horror,” said the 40-year-old. “All I can say is that it was really sad and I think it says so much about toxic masculinity.”
Kenny Rock speaks out about Will Smith
Now Kenny Rock, the brother of the victim, has also commented on the incident. At first he thought the slap was a rehearsed number. He only realized that Smith was serious when the actor continued to scold from the audience.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he called for drastic consequences. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is still advising on measures. Kenny Rock has clear ideas about how they should look like: The Academy should strip Smith of the Oscar he received for his performance in “King Richard” and ban him from attending further awards.
It is rather unlikely that this will actually happen. However, the damage that Will Smith caused with his uncontrolled behavior is becoming increasingly clear: HE damaged his career – and ruined the greatest moment of his professional life. It can hardly get much worse for him – no matter what the Academy decides.
