Disney: Talisa García becomes the first trans actress to be chosen by the studio for a Lucasfilm production

The studio’s initial silence on the bill sparked anger and frustration among many staff members who took it as a snub to the LGBTQ+ community and saw it as an example that “the house of the mouse” isn’t doing enough to support the diversity, something critics also believe the studio could do more on screen. Last year, the actress Raya and the last dragon, Patty Harrison, became the first known trans actress to voice a character in a Disney animated film. Most recently, trans non-binary actress Iris Menas portrayed Anybodys in 20th Century Studios’ remake of West Side Story. Meanwhile, there have been reports online in recent days that the Disney+ series Ironheart is looking to recruit a trans actress.

Last year, the movie Eternals from chloe zhao featured the first gay superhero in an MCU movie, with Brian Tyree Henry taking on the role of the Eternal and the inventor Phastos. Lauren Ridloff he also starred in the feature film, making history as the first deaf actor to play a superhero in a studio feature film.

Chilean-born British actress Talisa Garcia is best known for the BBC crime thriller Baptiste. Other credits include The Girlfriend Experience from Starz! and TBS’s Miracle Workers.
