The magic wands are drawn again: With “Dumbledore’s Secrets” the third part of the “Fantastic Beasts” series is now coming to the cinemas. As one is used to from J.K. Rowling, there is no stinginess with magical creatures and grand gestures. Eddie Redmayne reprises his role as the naïve Newt Scamander. He is tasked by Dumbledore (Jude Law) with tracking down Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) before he starts a war between the magical and non-magical worlds.
You notice it quickly: it’s getting political. If Grindelwald was still on the run, it doesn’t take long in the totalitarian system before the villain is even traded as a candidate for the election of the International Association of Magicians. The German Minister of Magic, Anton Vogel (Oliver Masucci), takes care of that. The visit to Berlin is an eye-opener for Scamander as far as fanaticism in their own ranks is concerned.
It is an adventurous journey to previously unknown places of magic, directed by director David Yates based on the screenplay co-written by Rowling. In many places, however, it has also become arbitrary and confused. The humorous touch has also gone under the wheels. Unfortunately, political banter and sleight of hand cannot make up for what “Dumbledore’s Secrets” loses in charm. As with its predecessor, much here feels like preparation for what may be to come. After all, you get to see Jude Law: The Briton puts on his Dumbledore with great ease. Mads Mikkelsen may not shine as Grindelwald following Johnny Depp’s exit, but he is a solid villain. (APA)
