“The pandemic and the war have put a spell on Europe, and we do musical entertainment theater,” says artistic director Harald Wurmsdobler, which may be circling in the minds of some. But this time, from June 11th to 26th, the Pramtal summer operetta will take on a piece that has striking parallels to today: “Two Hearts in Three-Quarter Time” by Robert Stolz, a composer who emigrated to the USA during the Nazi era and ” Despite all the adversities, he always remained an optimist and believed in the future”, Wurmsdobler bows to his “will to live and confidence”. His work, which premiered in Zurich in 1933, reflects the spirit of its time, which is closer to ours than one might think at first glance. “Even back then there was a threat from inside and outside and uncertainty. We want to show this connection in our production,” says Wurmsdobler, who himself plays a theater director in the play who is torn between the new rulers and his responsibility towards the ensemble.
The plot also tells of problems that are no stranger to us: “It’s about a theater world in distress,” says director Manuela Kloibmüller: “Being able to laugh about difficult things is the goal of the production,” which focuses on a composer “who is looking for new possibilities of expression and has to deliver a great waltz”, for which he lacks the muse.
