Two jazz duos in an idiosyncratic dialogue

On Friday evening, the Brucknerhaus presented two formations of European provenance that shaped this dialogue in a highly idiosyncratic manner.

Saxophonist Jean-Marc Larché and double bass player Yves Rousseau began as a duo continuum. The beginning sounded almost like a chorale, as if it were by the baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach. He later spoke very clearly. Simple, clear melodies, very carefully set tones, a lot of writing and little improvisation determined the plot. Phrasing and rhythmic design had little to do with jazz, but that didn’t detract from the beauty and relaxed elegance.

The second duo had a completely different tone. The Basel percussionist and electronic engineer Gregor Hilbe met the Trondheim trumpeter Hildegunn Øiseth. Completely different sound design: First, Hilbe buzzed electronically, then Øiseth’s reverberant horn joined them. A lot was floating, sounded a little esoteric, but also referred to other cultures. Unfortunately, the whole thing seldom gained pace and thus lightness and then no longer sounded so pregnant with meaning.
