People: Thomas Gottschalk understands Boris Becker

For Thomas Gottschalk there is no reason to react with malice in the case of Boris Becker.

Thomas Gottschalk stands by Boris Becker after his conviction in London. “Boris didn’t rip off impoverished grannies,” said the entertainer of “Bild”.

In the worst case, “a few rich financiers who wanted to adorn themselves with the fame of the tennis idol became a little poorer”. “My sympathy for them is limited,” quoted “Bild” the 71-year-old Gottschalk.

A jury in London found tennis legend Becker guilty on 4 out of 24 counts on Friday. The criminal case concerned the concealment of parts of his assets in bankruptcy proceedings. Judge Deborah Taylor plans to announce the sentence on April 29. Theoretically, Becker faces up to seven years in prison. However, he can then appeal – both against the guilty verdict and against the sentence. The 54-year-old had denied the allegations.

“The audience first applauded his successes and is now intoxicated by his decline,” Gottschalk told the “Bild”. “In my eyes, Boris was an athlete who achieved top sporting achievements and paid a high price for it in his life.” In terms of “coal and women” he made more mistakes than on the tennis court.
