Marcos Carnevale, director of “Hail”: “The exacerbated criticism of the film almost overshadowed the war in Ukraine”

“What happened to the criticism was unusual, what happened was too exacerbated, it almost overshadowed the war in Ukraine and we are talking about a movie,” said the director, who also claimed to have noticed “viciousness” and returns made “in a virulent way ” about his film. “I think it’s good that it is evaluated,” he clarified regarding how a critical look at a certain content works, but he also said he perceives a certain prejudice about the comic genre when evaluating it, and remarked that his films are made for the enjoyment of the public.

“We have the typical elements that a popular comedy does not enjoy prestige, that is as old as the cinema. In fact, it’s very rare for comedies to compete at festivals. All that exists, but this time there was cruelty towards Francella, towards me and towards the film, I can’t understand, for me the numbers she did made me angry, because it revealed a feeling of self-destruction, if an Argentine film does well in the world, why do we lower it? It’s even suicidal,” she said.

On the other hand, Carnevale also spoke about the controversy that the film aroused in the networks, and how that controversy, in his words, was transferred to the way of conceiving criticism. “On Twitter there was a terrifying impunity, there was a ‘Twitter effect’”.

Also, the director defined “Hail” as “a real success”, but admits to being angry. “There are countries that bought the film even without knowing who Francella was. For me the film is a success, I live it like that, outside they received it very well. The film is produced by two Argentine producers, the copyright is Argentine and the script is by an Argentine Oscar winner (Nicholas Giacobonescreenwriter of “birdman”film of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu which earned him the Academy Award)”, said the filmmaker who had already directed Francella in “Lion heart”.

“The film is between second and third place among foreign language films, the screens have expanded and we are seeing another era. The first four days more than 30 million people saw it, that’s what streaming makes possible, coming out in 170 countries at the same time, and maybe that made me angry, “Carnevale concluded.
