“We first started discussing a possible documentary about your country that wasn’t particularly focused on the war,” Penn said. “And since then there have been many exchanges between us. Then I went and met him face to face the day before the invasion. And I was with him during the invasion, the first day.”
Penn even contemplated fighting himself. “The only possible reason why I stayed longer in Ukraine was because I considered taking a rifle, probably without a bulletproof vest, because as a foreigner, you would want to give that bulletproof vest to one of the civilian fighters who doesn’t have it or to a fighter with more skills than me, or a younger man or woman who could fight longer or whatever. So at this point in life I can’t do that, but if you’ve been to Ukraine [luchar] It has to cross your mind. And do you think what century is this?
Penn, who returned to the US in early March, also revealed that he plans to return to the country. “My intention is to return to Ukraine,” he said. “But I’m not an idiot, I’m not sure what I can offer. I don’t spend a lot of time texting the president or his staff while they’re under siege and his people are being killed.”
The non-profit organization CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) of Penn, which he founded while volunteering in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, currently supports Ukrainian refugees in Poland. Although the organization is now led by co-founder and CEO Ann Leethe actor said he plans to “get down to business” when he returns to Poland or if he expands his operations to Ukraine itself.
“I have a lot to do with CORE on the receiving end of refugees in Poland,” he said. “I am shooting more for the documentary, but I will do a last minute assessment of its value. People will argue about this, and there are a million debates that I understand, but in the long run, we don’t have any tangible evidence that documentaries actually change anything. We just don’t. We only know that they can give hope.”
