“Walker Scobell is an incredibly talented young man who blew us away with his audition tapes for the role of Percy. Many of you recently found out just how cool Walker is when you saw his movie The Adam Project, in which Walker lit up the screen as a younger version of Ryan Reynolds’ character,” wrote Riordan, who will serve as a producer on this series.
“We were lucky enough to audition Walker months before that movie came out, but the film only confirmed what we already knew about his talent. It was obvious to me and the rest of the crew that Walker had the perfect combination of comedic timing, sweetness, rebelliousness, sarcasm and heroism to embody our hero Percy Jackson.”
According to Riordan, Scobell is a fan of the books of Percy Jackson and even showed up in a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt on the video call where he found out he landed the part of Percy.
Scobell is 13 years old so he is much closer to Percy’s age in the books, thus marking one of the first concrete differences between this series and the films Riordan so disliked. In fact, in announcing Scobell’s casting in the role, the writer made no secret of his excitement: “I broke the news to Walker personally via Zoom on January 28 that he had been cast in the role, and it was a surprise.” magical moment that made me feel for the first time: ‘Okay, this is real. This is worth all the waiting and hard work. This project is going to be amazing‘”.
Apart from Percy Jackson, the other two most important roles for this adaptation that will start with the plot of The Lightning Thief it’s Annabeth and Grover, but those roles haven’t been cast yet, though some actors have already done readings with Scobell.
“While I’m sure those two roles (Annabeth and Grover) are very close to being finalized and announced, I felt the time was right for them to meet our Percy,” commented Riordan.
The Percy Jackson series for Disney + would initially have 8 episodes, but it does not yet have a premiere date.
