THE ANCIENTS, SANTA CRUZ
Los Antiguos can be reached from El Chalten, a place much more popular with tourists. Los Antiguos is a green oasis in the middle of the desert, on the shores of Lake Buenos Aires and meters from the border with Chile. The town claims to be the national cherry capital, but it remains a mystery to many. There is the Cueva de las Manos. But there is more to do in Los Antiguos: trekking, biking, viewpoints, visiting ranches, discovering canyons, walking on a salt flat, and getting lost in a place called “Land of colors”. And, of course, eat cherries.

CAPE VIRGINS, SANTA CRUZ
Cabo Vírgenes becomes attractive from September to April, due to the massive arrival of the small and friendly Magellan penguin. About 120,000 pairs of penguins come together. During the summer each pair lays 2 eggs. Penguins are first born with feathers, and after a few weeks they begin to lose them to prepare the skin to jump into the sea. Leaving from Río Gallegos, the route to reach the Cabo Vírgenes penguin colony is along a dirt and stone road that is just after Chimen Aiken. There are about 130 km of gravel on a trip that takes about 3-4 hours. But the place is really worth it. In the area there is also the Hacienda Monte Dinero, where you can make a stop to eat and sleep. It is also very interesting to visit the mythical lighthouse of Cabo Vírgenes, from where Route 40 begins.
