It’s a sad glimpse into the childhood of a world star that is brought to light through the trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp. Depp’s sister testified in court about the siblings’ abusive childhood.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp have been back in court since Monday. They want to sue each other for damages for defamation. An aftermath of a failed and turbulent marriage. Now testifying in the trial is Johnny Depp’s sister, Christi Dembrowsk, and she sees major parallels between the siblings’ abusive mother and Depp’s ex-wife Heard.

Dembrowski was called to the witness stand by Depp’s lawyers on Tuesday. The 61-year-old told jurors about the siblings’ traumatic childhood. “Our father was a kind, patient, loving and gentle man. But our mother was the opposite. She was mostly very excited, very nervous, scared and also angry,” she said. Johnny Depp reportedly looked down at the ground most of the time while his sister shared more details. About her childhood in Kentucky, she said that the children were used to their mother yelling at their father and even hitting them. When asked further whether the father then resisted, Dembrowski describes: “No, our father never reacted when mother hit him or yelled at him. He let her scream and that’s it.”

Depp’s attorney, Chew, went into further detail, asking, “How did your mother treat you and your siblings?” The Hollywood star’s sister replied: “Similar to how she treated our father. She was screaming, she was hitting, she was throwing things, she was swearing at us. Each of us had our own nickname. Some we wouldn’t repeat. My name was Violet . Violet was my father’s mother and my mother hated her,” she said. The lawyer asked: “Did your mother have a special name for Johnny?” She replied: “‘One Eye’ was her favorite. Because when he was young the doctors thought he had a lazy eye, they put a patch on his good eye to strengthen his other eye.”

“How did Johnny react to all of this?” Benjamin asked Chew. “He was a typical little boy, when he got hurt he cried. For the most part he just wanted to run away from it,” said Dembrowski, adding that he never hit his mother back.

Christi Dembrowski was often close by Johnny Depp’s side, she says was seen as his “personal manager”. When traveling with Depp and Amber Heard, she often booked an extra room in case the couple had a fight. This allowed Johnny Depp to retire, which his sister says he did as a child. “The acts repeated. When we were kids, the arguments and fights started. The first thing we did was hide and run away. I realized that everything felt like a repeat pattern from his childhood to me. ” When Dembrowski found out Depp was marrying Heard, she was “scared,” she told the jury.
