The case against Cuba Gooding Jr. has been delayed, and now the actor has pleaded guilty to one of the three counts. What that means for him.
Almost three years after Cuba Gooding Jr. was arrested, a first decision in the case against him has now been reached. The Oscar winner has pleaded guilty to sexually molesting a woman. More precisely, he kissed a waitress in the New York nightclub “Lavo” against her will, his lawyer told the AFP news agency.
Cuba Gooding Jr. pleads guilty to one count
A total of more than 20 women said they had been groped against their will by the Hollywood star. Three of them had filed criminal charges. For Cuba Gooding Jr., the confession now means above all: He mustn’t be guilty of anything anymore. “If he stays decent, this charge will be withdrawn in six months and he will have no criminal record at the end of this matter,” his attorney said. The film star does not expect a prison sentence.
Gooding Jr. was originally arrested in 2019 after a 29-year-old woman filed a complaint against him, alleging that he grabbed her chest without consent at a bar near Times Square. A few months later, two other women accused him of similar allegations. For a long time, the 54-year-old had rejected all allegations and pleaded not guilty. The tactic used by his lawyers initially was to accuse the prosecutor of being too driven by the “MeToo” movement. They argued that “everyday gestures” are not crimes.
Allegations by dozens of women
Prosecutors threatened to summon two more women as witnesses, who even accuse the actor of rape, should there be a trial. Gooding Jr. was able to avert this with his partial confession.
In a separate trial, Gooding Jr. also has to defend himself. It is about rape allegations, the alleged act is said to have taken place in 2013.
