Friday afternoon, half past two. There is an unexpected knock in the staff room. What to do? Surely it won’t be a student?
Is not it.
Even worse: a father.
He fights for his son because he failed to qualify for the Matura by just one point in the exam. The situation spirals out of control, suddenly a shot is fired and the six self-confident teachers have become hostages – forced by the desperate father to discuss the grade again in a conference.
In his new comedy “Enclosed Society”, which has been in cinemas since yesterday, the German director Sönke Wortmann takes a sharp look at the teachers’ room and creates a bitter reckoning with the school system, prominently cast with stars such as Florian David Fitz and Anke Engelke or Justus von Dohnányi.
Wortmann, who already appeared in the comedy “Frau Müller muss weg!” amusingly caricatures the madness surrounding the transition from elementary school to high school, now draws different types of teachers that many probably know from his school days. The frustrated cynics young people hate. The cool ones who walk a fine line between popularity and pandering. The nice ones that nobody takes seriously. Or the relaxed ones, who are popular with young people and are therefore eyed with disapproval by the frustrated.
The comedy is bursting with biting dialogue, but strings one cliché after another. That’s often funny, especially since the teacher types are well taken. In the long run, however, it also tires, since the characters revolve primarily around themselves. Nevertheless, the film is good as entertaining evidence of the often uninspired German school system, even if it is to hear sentences like this from the hated Frau Lohmann (Engelke): “I don’t hate young people. I just can’t stand them.” (maf)
