Francois Ozon’s film “Everything went well” (“Tout s’est bien passé”) is based on the autobiographical book of the same name by the author Emmanuèle Bernheim. To a large extent, he sticks to her real story: she and her sister had to watch as their father, the art collector André Bernheim, suffered a stroke at the age of 88 and lost all lust for life. With his request for euthanasia, he plunged Emmanuèle and the rest of the family into a crisis.
Originally, Emmanuèle Bernheim was supposed to play herself, but before the realization she died of lung cancer at the age of 61. Ozone later took over the project – and gained a top-class ensemble for it. André Dussollier plays the suicidal rich industrialist with verve, Sophie Marceau credibly the favorite daughter who slowly decides to take her father’s wishes seriously. With her sister Pascale (Géraldine Pailhas), she begins a struggle that becomes a personal reckoning.
The amazing thing about “Tout s’est bien passé” is its balance between grotesque, tragi-comic features and genuine melodrama. While the daughters deal with existential questions, which include complicity in the death of their own father, he repeatedly takes refuge in the role of the innocent. And is then all the more present when it comes to asserting one’s own wishes. The highlight of this duo is his farewell dinner in the local bar, where the daughter struggles to keep her composure at the father’s cheerfulness, while the good friends at the next table are left believing that everything is fine.
