DJ Kay Slay has died at the age of 55. Rappers like Snoop Dogg and Ice-T have paid tribute to the hip-hop star on Instagram.
DJ Kay Slay died at the age of 55 after contracting the coronavirus. The DJ and radio host was also known under the pseudonyms The Drama King or Kay Slay and as a graffiti artist under Dez. Keith Grayson, his real name, died last Sunday after a month-long battle with the disease.
“DJ Kay Slay is a dominant figure in hip-hop culture with millions of fans worldwide and will be remembered for his passion and excellence with a legacy that will last for generations,” his family said in a statement. Hip-hop network Hot 97, on which Kay Slay hosted shows, explained: “As a cultural icon, Kay Slay was more than just a DJ, to us he was family and an important part of what made Hot 97 the successful network who he is today.”
Rappers mourn him
The hip-hop world has also spoken out about DJ Kay Slay’s death. Rapper Snoop Dogg (50) posted on Instagram of the deceased with the words: “Thank you for being you. God bless your soul. Say hello to my mother for me.”
50 Cent (46) also remembered the DJ with a picture and the words “rest in peace, K slay, God bless you”. Colleague Ice-T (64) explained: “I followed his whole struggle in the hospital. I honestly thought he would pull through. It really hurts. F… Covid. Rest in peace Drama King.”
