More and more people in Germany are also working beyond the official retirement age. In the past ten years up to 2019, the proportion has even doubled.
In Germany, many people work longer than before. In 2019, 8 percent of people over 65 years of age were still gainfully employed, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office.
The share was twice as high as ten years earlier with 4 percent. The retirement age has been rising gradually since 2012, from 65 to 67 in 2031.
Many people are already working longer than they should, especially the highly qualified: In this group, every fourth person in the age group between 65 and 69 was still professionally active.

The self-employed also hold onto their job longer than most employees. According to the Federal Office’s assessment, this is due to the fact that they do not have to pay into the pension insurance. They therefore lack the external reason, namely reaching the age limit, for giving up the job. According to statistics, more than a third of all senior employees are dependent on income to support themselves, while for the rest it is more about additional income.
