Danube Island Festival will be “like it was back then”

If the virus situation allows it, the major event will take place in a classic format with all stages and free entry. Access controls or mask requirements are not planned. The organizer, the Vienna SPÖ, announced this on Wednesday. The 39th edition will take place from June 24th to 26th.

Details of the program will be presented at a later date. At least it was revealed that there will be a new “Heurigen and Storytelling Island”. But the focus is not only on regional cultural work, unlike last time, international acts are also to appear again. For example, a K-Pop evening with participants from South Korea was announced.

Artists from Ukraine perform

It is also clear that the war in Ukraine will be an issue. As SPÖ state party secretary Barbara Novak announced, artists from Ukraine will be given the opportunity to perform. Donations are also collected as part of charity campaigns. There will also be a big sea of lights on Friday to show solidarity with Ukraine.

In the past two years, the Danube Island Festival has only taken place in a reduced form. Last year there were strict access rules. In 2020, only a few visitors – who were allowed to sit in front of a single stage – were admitted. Now things should return to normal. In numbers, according to Inselfest project manager Matthias Friedrich, this means: a 4.5-kilometer-long festival area that will come up with a 600-hour program. More than 1000 artists were engaged.
