Prince Edward is to travel with his wife – similar to Prince William and Duchess Kate recently – on the occasion of the Queen’s jubilee through the Caribbean. But problems are emerging.
Shortly before departure, Buckingham Palace shortened the Caribbean tour of Prince Edward (58) and his wife Countess Sophie (57) by one station.
After consultations with the government of the island state of Grenada and on the advice of the governor-general, the visit there was postponed, the palace said in a statement. No further reasons were given.
The youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II (96) and his wife Sophie want to go to the Caribbean this Friday on the occasion of the Queen’s 70th jubilee. They should visit Saint Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda as well as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines by April 28th.
Similar to the Caribbean trip of Queen’s grandson Prince William (39) and his wife Duchess Kate (40), the tour is considered a charm offensive in countries where Elizabeth II is still head of state. However, William and Kate’s trip was marred by protests over the royals’ role in Britain’s colonial past and slavery.
British newspapers speculated that the unusually short-notice cancellation for the stay in Grenada could have to do with fears of further protests.
