From 1989 to 1999, the Viennese native headed the Vienna Conservatory, today’s Music and Art Private University (MUK), and from 1990 to 2003 the Vienna Male Choir.
Born on September 17, 1934, Track himself was a Vienna Boys’ Choir from 1942 to 1948. As the youngest conductor of the famous boys’ choir, he conducted one of the traveling boys’ choirs from 1953 to 1958 and thus began his career. In 1958 the musician was appointed to St. John’s University in Minnesota. From 1965 to 1969 he was conductor and music director of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra of Minneapolis, after which he took over the direction of the symphony orchestra in Pueblo, Colorado. Track has undertaken extensive concert tours with his ensembles and made a name for himself as a guest conductor in the USA, Canada and Europe.
Head of the Conservatory
In the autumn of 1986 Gerhard Track returned to Vienna, where he took over the direction of the “Jung-Wien” choir association until 1996 and began teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts (until 1989) and at the Vienna Conservatory, to which he also served as director from 1989 to 1999.
Track also appeared as a composer of serious music (orchestral works, choral compositions, songs and masses). From 1988 to 1992 he was President of the Austrian Composers’ Union. The musician was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit.
