Joyce Ilg posts the first video statement – some devastating reactions

Joyce Ilg got a shit storm for her knockout spell, which she posted for a selfie with Luke Mockridge. Now she has tried to get into conversation with her critics.

She had already announced that she wanted to talk to all those people who had criticized her joke about knockout drops. Joyce Ilg has now done this and posted a first video statement in which she explains that she wrote to many people in her messages.

On Easter Sunday, Ilg posted a selfie of himself and Luke Mockridge and wrote: “Did any of you find any eggs here? I only got a few ko drops.” The reactions to it were mostly scathing. Ilg also received criticism from colleagues and fans. That was not only because of the joke itself, but also because of the context in which it was ripped, a photo with mockridge. It was meant to be a reference to a joke from Mockridge’s previous stage performances. But Mockridge’s past also played a role in the criticism of Ilg’s saying. An ex-girlfriend has accused the comedian of attempted rape, and the case has been dropped. He denies the allegations. “Der Spiegel” reported extensively last year on the alleged misconduct of the 33-year-old. He also denies these allegations.

“Let’s talk about borders in this society in general,” says Ilg in her video statement. The comedian had already said last week that in addition to humor boundaries, one should also discuss shitstorm boundaries. “I take your feelings seriously. Even bad, angry messages, there are feelings behind them that should be taken seriously,” she explains. Ilg emphasizes that she would never joke about personal suffering, but then draws a comparison that is currently being dismantled by numerous users on the Internet. “There are so many disabilities that people die of earlier, (…) and I’ve seen many comedians who made jokes about it, (…) who didn’t get such shitstorms. (…) The topic um that it worked for me, a lot more people have had personal experience with it, or is it because the topic is more hyped at the moment?” she tries to explain.

reactions devastating

The reactions to Ilg’s video statement are mostly scathing. “Sorry, I really don’t get along here anymore: Are you defending rape gags by saying that there are comedians who are ableistic? I don’t succeed with this intellectual transfer performance with the best of intentions. What exactly do you want to say with this statement, because it will not clear despite the eleven minutes,” writes author Jasmina Kuhnke under the post. “A compliment when you try to get out of the matter and are obviously even stupider, more unreflected than previously thought,” writes one on Twitter. “I don’t know anyone who has tried to explain their joke so many times,” joked one. “A lot of ‘I I I’, little to no ‘I’m sorry’,” comments a user on Ilg’s video.

Influencer Julia Tschuggi explains to Ilg with a longer comment why her knockout spell wasn’t a joke. “My humor also has few limits. But what you describe here as a gag was simply not a gag. You only used the charged atmosphere around your friend to make a provocative post. That was nothing more,” she writes and adds: “Unfortunately, the big philosophical discussion that you now want to have about humor cannot distract you from the fact that it was just a stupid saying that you didn’t think more about than ‘Whoa lol I’m so edgy ey’. And for that unnecessary, boring saying, you shouldn’t have hurt so many people.”

Ilg received praise from actress Doreen Dietel, who commented that one shouldn’t spend one’s life hating hate because “the Russians only have to press the button and we are ALL history”. Celebrity chef Roland Trettl, meanwhile, says he enjoyed listening to Ilg and doesn’t think she wishes anyone ill.
