They say the worst patients are doctors. Perhaps because when something bad happens to them they know what it is, how they are going to treat them during hospitalization, and also how they plan to increase prices and fees. The Italian cinema of the 70s made it very clear in the comedy “El doctor de la mutual” and in the revealing “Scalpel, the mafia in white”. With a different tone, and a happy ending, within what is possible, the Chilean film that was presented yesterday in the Official Competition now says its own thing. It is “El pa(de)ciente”, by Constanza Fernández, based on the book of the same title by Miguel Kotow, an ophthalmologist, who was a sudden victim of Guillain-Barré syndrome, had a bad time, but was able to recover (with sequelae ), recover your space and tell your experience “from the other side of the counter”. The referred syndrome, it is necessary to explain, is a rare disorder where the immune system misses its mission and can quickly lead to paralysis. When something is rare, infrequent, attending to it is more expensive. And, here comes the good part, the space that Dr. Kotow occupies is the chair of Bioethics in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile.
