“The Walking Dead”: Jeffrey Dean Morgan calls some followers of the series “toxic”

“Some of you have gone too far,” wrote who plays Negan in the series from his Twitter account. “TOXIC. Attacking [Norman Reedus] for some shit it has NOTHING to do with? Melissa made a call that was hers alone. She wants/she needs a break. Respect that. Factors involved that are nobody’s business. Norm, who has given more than anyone to all of you. Just SHIT.”

Fans have speculated on social media that Reedus was behind the decision to film the spin-off series in Europe, indirectly causing McBride to leave the show. But as Morgan told fans, “Norman had nothing to do with the choice of venue. That decision has to do with history, ideas… MONEY. That’s studio/network. Not actors. We can say yes and do, or no, and not do… MAYBE. SOMETIMES. If we’re lucky and we still don’t have a contract. Rarely does an actor have that power.”

The Carol-Daryl spinoff was originally announced in September 2020 with McBride and Reedus headlining. The series will now focus solely on Daryl. Morgan has played Negan in “The Walking Dead” for several seasons and is getting her own spinoff with co-star Lauren Cohen.

“Melissa McBride has brought to life one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in the ‘The Walking Dead’ universe,” AMC said in a statement announcing McBride’s departure. “Unfortunately, she can no longer participate in the previously announced spinoff centered on the characters of Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier, which will be set and filmed in Europe this winter and will be released next year. Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this point. We know fans will be disappointed with this news, but The Walking Dead universe continues to grow and expand in exciting ways and we look forward to seeing Carol again in the near future.”

“The Walking Dead” is currently on hiatus from the airing of its eleventh and final season. The final batch of episodes will debut on AMC this spring and across the region on Star+.
