The reasons for this change are unknown. The Bolshoi, questioned by AFP, did not comment.
Respected director and filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov is based in Berlin. In late April he told AFP that he had recently left his native Russia out of “conscience” and had harshly criticized the Russian offensive in Ukraine.
Known for his support for LGBT+ people, the artist was sentenced in 2020 for diversion of funds to three years in prison with a suspended sentence, and a ban on leaving the country.
His ballet on Rudolf Nureyev, prodigious dancer who fled the USSR to Europe, was replaced by “Spartacus”, a very martial piece. At the beginning of April, the theater had presented this historic ballet in support of the Russian military operation in Ukraine
Timofei Kulyabin, a young and innovative director, also left Russia and posted several critical messages about the conflict on social media.
After the start of the offensive, on February 24, several great Bolshoi dancers have left the theater. Among them is the star dancer Olga Smirnova and several foreigners.
The New York Met has ended co-productions and the Bolshoi’s long-awaited annual foreign tour.
