The singer had dabbled in the ’60s with a folk-acoustic style in pubs and festivals in Buenos Aires, until in the decade she decided to move to El Bolsón, in the midst of the wave of horse racing.

In 1982 he returned to Buenos Aires and debuted with his own album, with his own name and the participation of famous national rock names such as David Lebón, León Gieco and his own brother Miguel, from which María José achieved a certain notoriety and came to participate in the BA Rock festival.

In 1989 she ventured again with a second album, which did not have the expected repercussion and her life took a stormy turn, after being the cover of Playboy magazine, she was detained for two years and eight months for drug trafficking in 1992.

Starting in 2000, she began a slow return to music, and was invited to the Rosa Tosa Festival, organized by Erica García, in Cemento, along with other greats of vernacular rock such as Celeste Carballo and Claudia Puyó.

He was also in a reissue of “La Marcha de la Bronca” in 2004 with his brother Miguel and in 2011 he released a new album, “Esencia”, which was produced by his son Gaspar Benegas, guitarist for Indio Solari.
