Its director will be the screenwriter and director Damien Chazelle (whose film “La La Land”, a tribute to classic musical cinema that was on the verge of winning an Oscar if Faye Dunaway had not corrected herself when reading the envelope), and will be played by the “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” co-stars Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. “Babylon” will be a period piece about the transition period in the film industry when silent movies gave way to talkies.
Some of the action takes place during the filming of a Griffith-esque epic, even if “Bigotry” isn’t specifically mentioned, as the camera pans through nightclubs and other sets. Jack Conrad, Pitt’s character, says at one point in the film: “When I first moved to Hollywood, the signs on every door said ‘no actors and no dogs.’ We change it. Everyone had to have their chance, also the actors”.
The film will be released on January 6, 2023 and is already an Oscar candidate. Though Chazelle hasn’t given any plot details, the drama centers on industry titans Clara Bow, Elinor Glyn, and Paramount studio executive Irving Thalberg, played by Max Minghella. The cast also includes Samara Weaving, Jun Li, Katherine Waterston, Olivia Wilde, Spike Jonze, Lukas Haas and Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Tobey Maguire, who is also an executive producer on the film, will play Charlie Chaplin.
During Paramount’s 2022 CinemaCon presentation, audiences were treated to the first glimpses of the film, with a sequence in which Brad Pitt dons a large fake nose to dodge potential impalement from a spear as an actor on set. Pitt’s character was “in the line of fire.” Robbie’s character exhibited impressive makeup and hair for the period piece. “You don’t become a star,” Robbie tells Brad Pitt before giving him a wink. “Either you are…or you’re not.” Robbie replaces “La La Land” Oscar winner Emma Stone, who was originally set to direct the sprawling epic but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Paramount has set “Babylon” for a limited release on December 25 (in order to get into the Oscars) and a wide release on January 6, 2023.
Paramount CEO Brian Robbins called the film “truly spectacular” and a “bold and brilliant” masterpiece from Chazelle, who already holds a record as the youngest person to win best director with “The The Land”. Though much of the plot has been kept under wraps, “Babylon” is said to have already captivated test audiences, who have cited the big turns Chazelle took in capturing the silent era.
