“The Walking Dead”: Norman Reedus spoke about the departure of Melissa McBride from the spinoff focused on Daryl and Carol

“Twelve years is a grueling schedule,” Reedus told Fallon. “He wanted to take some time off and he’s doing it. He deserves it.”

The network had announced in 2020 that a Reedus and McBride-focused spinoff would succeed the main Walking Dead show after concluding its story with an expanded eleventh season. But last week, AMC announced that McBride would no longer be a part of the show, as moving to Europe, where the spin-off will film this summer, “became logistically untenable.”

Still, Reedus believes this isn’t the end of the Daryl-Carol story. “I imagine those characters will meet again at some point, and they might even meet other characters in the future,” he said.

“Meanwhile,” he added, “they said, ‘Hey, do you want to go on a mission?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we’re going on a mission.'”

Not all fans of The Walking Dead they were so understanding of McBride’s decision. Jeffrey Dean MorganNegan on the series noted in a tweet that some had “gone too far” in their responses to the news. Apparently, there were those who blamed Reedus for the decision to send the production to Europe to be near his family. (Reedus is married to the German actress Diana Kruger).

“Attacking Norman for some shit he has NOTHING to do with? Melissa made a call that was all about her. She wants/needs a break. Respect that,” Morgan tweeted. “Factors involved that are nobody’s business. Norm, who has given you all the most. Just SHIT.”

He emphasized that Reedus “had nothing to do with choosing the location.” “That decision has to do with story, ideas… MONEY. That’s studio/network. Not actors,” she wrote. “We can say yes and do, or no, and not do… MAYBE. SOMETIMES. If we’re lucky and we’re not signed yet. Rarely does an actor have that power.”

The spin-off series, now centered on Daryl, is planned to premiere in 2023.
