Depp originally filed the $50 million lawsuit against Heard in 2019, but was delayed due to the pandemic. The lawsuit relates to a December 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post about surviving domestic violence, though she never mentioned Depp by name.
Depp declared that his “goal is the truth” as he seeks to clear his name at the trial, which is being televised live through various outlets. Before the trial, Heard released a statement in which he said: “I hope that when this case is concluded, I can move on and so can Johnny. I have always had a love for Johnny and It causes me great pain to have to live the details of our past life together in front of the world“.
Heard and Depp met while making the movie The Rum Diary 2011, and then married in 2015. They separated in May 2016, when Heard filed for a domestic violence restraining order against him, accusing him of abusing her. Depp denied the claims, and the former couple settled their divorce out of court in August 2016.
During his testimony, Depp, who has said several times under oath that he never hit Heard or any woman, said that after Heard’s accusations against him, he lost “nothing less than everything.”
In November 2020, Depp lost his much-publicized UK libel lawsuit case against the British tabloid The Sun for calling him a “wife beater”. The court confirmed the outlet’s claims as “substantially true” and Heard testified to support the claims. In March 2021, the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s attempt to overturn the decision was overturned.
One of Depp’s witnesses, his former marriage counselor, Dr. Laurel Anderson, previously testified in this case that Depp and Heard committed “mutual abuse” against each other. Anderson said she also saw “multiple” small bruises on Heard’s face at an in-person meeting. In audio recordings, Heard admitted to punching Depp, and a Depp security guard testified that he once saw Heard punch Depp.
