According to the Argentine Vegan Union (UVA) in 2021, 12% of the Argentine population is vegan or vegetarian, from which a significant percentage that likes wine. For this, it is not enough to communicate through the media that the wine is sustainable; In order to support this statement, there is the sustainability certification that is given by means of different certificates; These certificates can usually be seen on the back label of the wine and are recognized by having the shape of a seal. Certificates such as “Carbon Footprint”, “Vegan”, “Organic”, “Biodynamic” or “V-Label” are certificates that enjoy worldwide prestige and recognition and the latter can be seen, among others, in the wines produced by de Bodega Amalaya and Colome.
The largest area or hectares dedicated to the production of sustainable vineyards are found in Mendoza, followed by Salta and in the Patagonian region, expanding more and more in all the wine-producing areas of the country. Far from thinking that it is a fad, the investment of money and effort, added to the projection of each winery, shows that the future line to be followed in Argentine viticulture and in the world, goes in the direction of sustainability, which indicates a dedication and culture of planting, harvesting, vinification and production more focused on the context where each of these scenarios takes place.
The trend of sustainable wines is something that has been appreciated for a long time, 10 years ago 70% of the wine list of prestigious restaurants in Paris or London, were the so-called organic or biodynamic, adjectives that we read in books or in internet articles but that in Argentina, it was not common in almost any wine label. Let us be encouraged by the idea that a good diet pairs wonderfully with a new healthy traditional way of drinking.
