Music doesn’t make anyone a better person, believes violinist Anne Sophie-Mutter. But when playing music together, you can learn empathy and consideration.
According to star violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, the music also has political potential. “Politicians should make music together, then we would be in a completely different dialogue with each other,” said the 58-year-old from the “Rheinische Post”.
When making music, you are at eye level, you notice “what feelings the other person has – and you accept their opinions and their rights more easily.”
Music is “in no way designed to make us better people,” said mother, who lives in Munich. “But it is a basis for shared experience and cultural exchange, which works on a completely different level beyond language and takes place very early in life – and should take place.”
In view of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, she has no problems at all with playing music by Russian composers. As for the Russian artists who are being talked about a lot these days, Mother said: “Would we really raise our voices if we knew that we would have to be behind bars for 15 years? You can always say that you are a hero yourself from the comfort of your armchair.»
