Kamala Harris visits the Mexican border – after weeks of criticism

This Friday, Kamala Harris is going on a much-noticed trip to the border region in the south of the USA: She wants to get an idea of the migration crisis. There has been a sharp criticism from Donald Trump.

Kamala Harris is visiting the Mexican border this Friday. The US Vice President’s trip is not an easy mission – the migration policy of the government under President Joe Biden has long been the target of sometimes harsh criticism, because tens of thousands of people from Central America have tried to travel to the United States every day since the new US administration took office reach. In the south of the USA, especially in Texas, there is therefore talk of a migration crisis.

Harris had been asked repeatedly in the past few weeks to form his own opinion of the situation on the American-Mexican border – both from political opponents and in the media. So far she had refused.

Many of the immigrants who try to cross the border on a daily basis are minors. The reception camps in the south of the USA are considered overcrowded, the situation miserable and especially dangerous for children and young people.

Kamala Harris visits the border town of El Paso

Harris will travel to the Texas border town of El Paso with Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mayorkas, the White House announced on Wednesday. She was commissioned by Biden with migration policy in March. The aim of their mission is in particular to address the causes of migration, especially from the Central American states of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. At the beginning of the month, the Vice President therefore traveled to Guatemala and Mexico. In Guatemala, she caused a stir with her request to those willing to migrate not to go to the USA: “Don’t come,” she repeated several times emphatically.

Biden pursues a much more liberal migration policy than his Republican predecessor Donald Trump, who recently turned away all migrants at the border because of the corona pandemic. Biden suspended some of the tightening after taking office. The opposition Republicans are therefore accusing the current US president of having triggered a crisis on the border.

Donald Trump also wants to travel to the region

For his part, Trump is planning a visit to the Texas border region next week. The ex-president announced on Wednesday that Harris had ignored the crisis at the border for months. During her visit, she will see “the enormous destruction and death” that the Biden government has caused.

The border protection agency CBP recently announced that the US authorities had apprehended more migrants on the southern border within a month in May than in more than two decades. Exactly 180,034 illegal crossings were registered on the border with Mexico. The last time this mark was reached was in April 2000 with 180,050 illegal border crossings, according to CBP data.

In principle, every refugee in the USA has the right to apply for asylum. Children and young people who travel alone are not deported
