A magnificent organ festival in Wels

Johann Nepomuk David was responsible for the organ that was built in 1930 in the evangelical Christ Church. The restoration of the organ of the parish church took place in 1958 under the supervision of Josef Friedrich Doppelbauer; Ernst Ludwig Leitner planned the organ of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in 1982. Leitner is spiritus rector of the Long Night of the Organ in Wels, where on Friday each of the three concerts featured one work by each of these three organist-composers.

For Leitner’s “Walpurgis Night”, organist Dom Ezechiele Pereira chose transcriptions of works by Bach and César Franck in the Herz-Jesu-Kirche and closed the virtuoso and exuberantly varied evening with Max Reger’s adaptation of Bach’s Chromatic Fugue. The second concert in the Christ Church was performed by organist Bernhard Prammer and flautist Norbert Trawöger, who focused on the work of Alfred Mitterhofer and celebrated both the “Smile of St. Zeno of Verona” and the fascinatingly elegiac “Cantique”. Axel Flierl was the brilliant organist of the third concert in the parish church, in which Doppelbauer’s “Capriccio” formed the common thread. (wuss)
