Parratoro: kinetic art in a new generation

Gego, born in Hamburg, is considered one of the great Venezuelan sculptors who, based on European constructivism, produced extremely important works during the 70s, 80s and early 90s, the heyday of geometric abstract art and kinetic art in Venezuela.

These three artists and others such as Alexander Calder, Jean Arp, Vasarely and Joan Miró, influenced Rafael Parratoro (Caracas, 1977, lives in Buenos Aires since 2008), an engineer and mathematician graduated from the Central University of Caracas who is currently exhibiting “Three Point Zero ” at Cott Gallery, curated by Agustina Rinaldi.

He exhibited in Berlin, Mexico, Miami and in Argentina he paid tribute to Jorge Luis Borges under the title “Moireph”, he intervened the Obelisk on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Garraham Hospital, he exhibited “The evolution of form” in the Borges Cultural Center, is co-author of the design of Kinetic Watches, author of an animated book “Pop on Pop”, a book-object with interactive animations in real time and recently participated in Lollapalooza 2022.

His works, in physical and digital versions, are made in Fine Art printing, acrylic and mirrored acrylic and obey the rules of formal rigor, characteristic of this discipline. He uses mathematical equations, Excel, calculus and analytical geometry which would seem to establish a distance and a certain coldness. However, he produces an emotional charge in perception due to the luminosity that emanates from the chromatic effects, becoming playful and hypnotic.

Parratoro has developed a digital neo-kinetic art and his contribution to traditional kinetic art is linked to the combination of moiré forms and the use of computerized programming. He is also a pioneer in using the technique of augmented reality in this discipline that is carried out by digital means with the cell phone and that consists of adding elements to reality that can be informative, decorative or utilitarian, which gives artists of express yourself through a new way of making art

Like the aforementioned kinetic artists, he manages to get the viewer to interact with the work, an act that is established unconsciously. In a recent report he pointed out that the viewer is the protagonist and in a critical evening he pointed out that kinetism has not had a more marked social tint because it can only be acquired by an elite. Hence, augmented reality makes him an accessible artist and from his account on Instagram (@parratoro) a sculpture of his authorship can be installed. His works have been seen and used 1,295,000 times in a year.

In another of his statements, he refers to the fact that “making art in movement connects you with the Universe.” (Juncal 3575 First Floor. Monday to Friday from 12 to 18).
