After a mudslinging that was as violent as it was public, the defamation trial against Coleen Rooney, influencer and wife of striker icon Wayne Rooney, began in London on Tuesday. Rebekah Vardy, also a famous footballer’s wife, has denied Rooney’s allegations that she leaked confidential information to the tabloid The Sun. What happened?
Rebekah Vardy vs Coleen Rooney
On her Instagram and Twitter profile in October 2019, Coleen Rooney accused her boyfriend Rebekah Vardy of betraying and betraying her. For a long time she suspected that someone from her circle of friends would pass on details from her private Instagram stories to the British newspaper “The Sun” and therefore considered a strategy to convict the traitor.
“I blocked everyone from seeing my Instagram stories except for one account,” she wrote. “I’ve been posting a bunch of fake stories over the past five months to see if they would make their way onto The Sun. She also said she and her family had been threatened by Rooney after the posting.

Vardy’s attorney said his client had no choice but to file a defamation lawsuit. Under British law, Rooney, nicknamed “Wagatha Christie” because of her detective work, must now prove her allegations in court.
The appearances of both “WAGs” in court (stands for “Wives and Girlfriends”, the name of English players’ wives) were of course not inconspicuous. Both are said to have sold their stories and were accompanied by cameras. Dressed in designer clothes, they walked into the courthouse. Vardy testified on the witness stand that she suffered both physically and mentally from Rooney’s allegations. Her then unborn baby was even in danger because her body was so battered, she said. Her former girlfriend called her a “school bully”.
The hearings are scheduled to last six days.
