“Top Gun: Maverick” takes place 30 years after the original and finds Maverick forced to train a new generation of A-list pilots. The new recruits are played by characters such as Miles Teller, Glenn Powell, Monica Barbaro and Jay Ellis. Teller plays Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, a trainee pilot who is the son of Maverick’s late best friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Kosinski said that he didn’t even meg ryanwho played Goose’s wife in the original film, was considered to return even though the Bradshaw family is a key plot point in this new film.
“Those weren’t stories that we were pitching,” Kosinski said of bringing back the original female stars. “I didn’t want all the stories to always look back. It was important to introduce some new characters.”
Kosinski preferred to limit the connective tissue between the original “Top Gun” and its sequel to Goose’s son and the relationship between Maverick and Iceman. Cruise recently told Entertainment Tonight that he “he put in a lot of effort” to get Kilmer back for the sequel.
Instead of McGillis, “Top Gun: Maverick” presents Jennifer Connolly as a romantic lead. The Oscar winner plays Penny Benjamin, who was mentioned in the “Top Gun” original as “the admiral’s daughter” with whom Maverick had an affair. Penny is a single mother in “Top Gun: Maverick” who owns a bar.
“Penny Benjamin, a character we’ve heard about but never seen before, was an incredible opportunity to bring the character of Jennifer Connelly into this film,” said Kosinski.
McGillis first revealed in 2019 that she wasn’t asked to star in the “Top Gun” sequel, saying at the time, “I’m old, I’m fat, and I seem age appropriate.” And that’s not what the whole scene is about. For me, I prefer to feel absolutely in my skin and who I am at my age instead of valuing all those other things.
“Top Gun: Maverick” opens in theaters on May 26 from Paramount Pictures.
