Prince William’s wife is well versed in royal issues. And she shares her knowledge.
Thanks to royal insider knowledge from Duchess Kate (40), a student in Scotland has solved a question in a crossword puzzle.
The 21-year-old Jack Baird couldn’t think of the right answer when asked about the royal family – but the wife of Queen’s grandson Prince William (39) immediately found the right solution, as the Times newspaper reported on Thursday. The indication was “annual allowance of the sovereign”. “I knew it had to be ‘civil something’,” Baird said afterwards. “I asked Kate and she said ‘civil list’. She seemed very excited when she found out.”
Baird caught Kate’s attention during her visit to Glasgow University by waving a newspaper at her. “It was two words with four or five letters,” said the student. “I couldn’t think of the second word. I asked Kate because I was sure she would know.”
Appanage to the Queen
The “Civil List” was the amount due to Queen Elizabeth II as an annual appanage for things like servants’ salaries and state visits. In 2011, the “civilian list” was replaced by the “Sovereign Grant”.
Kate and William were in Scotland for a two day visit. They also attended a primary school in Glasgow, where Kate cuddled a baby. Looking at the mother of three’s joy at the child, her husband joked: “Can you get my wife out of here before she gets thoughtful?”
