Tribute to Sara Facio in Fine Arts

In open contrast to the vitality of these luminous characters, the dark world of the “Funerals of President Perón” opens up, a dramatic series of black and white images taken in 1974. The photographs show a country and a vulnerable society that express, more What pain, helplessness. Seen in retrospect, these portraits mark the beginning of an era.

Sara Facio’s trajectory covers -in large part-, the history of Argentine photography. Although the mass public’s taste for this discipline only began to manifest itself in this century, our country has a long tradition of talented photographers. And Facio, together with Jorge Glusberg at the National Museum of Fine Arts, was the first to open the collections to the public. She had already created La Azotea, an editorial to publish books on photography, exclusively. Shortly after the arrival of democracy, she founded the Photogallery of the San Martín Cultural Center and, in 1998, she inaugurated the Fine Arts collection. Since then, the Museum legitimizes with its prestige the value of the works it treasures. Today it has more than account with more than 1,500 images.

During his tribute exhibition, Facio highlighted: “The years I was in this Museum, despite the misunderstandings that there were from which I was always away, I had a great time, I felt very supported. I want to ask for a souvenir for Jorge Glusberg, who gave me the freedom to do what he wanted: to give rise to photography as art, as human expression, and, in addition, to make exhibitions of great artists. In the fifteen years that I was curator of the Fine Arts, from 1995 to 2010, I made more than 60 exhibitions in the country and abroad, and I always had the support of many people from the Museum”. Facio donated 50 major works by international celebrities and has just given the MNBA his extensive library specializing in photography.
