Met Gala: Guests must be vaccinated and wear masks indoors

Instead of May, the Met Gala will take place in mid-September this year. The reason is the corona pandemic, which did not allow the original date. And even now the fashion event will have strict rules.

On Tuesday, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio reacted to rising corona numbers in his city and announced one of the toughest steps yet: New Yorkers will soon have to show proof of vaccination if they want to eat inside a restaurant, go to the gym or do a demonstration look at. This also has consequences for the Met Gala, the fashion event of the year.

Strict corona rules at the Met Gala

“Currently, all attendees at the Met Gala on September 13th must be fully vaccinated and must wear masks indoors, except when eating or drinking. We will update these guidelines as necessary,” a spokeswoman told Daily Beast magazine. Also at the New York Fashion Week in the fall, guests are only accepted with vaccinations.

The event, which takes place every year with a different motto, was canceled last year due to the pandemic and postponed to September this year. Usually the gala always takes place on the first Monday in May.

New York Mayor cracks down

De Blasio explained the consequent step with the Delta variant, which is also slowly gaining the upper hand in the USA. “The only way to visit these facilities indoors is to be vaccinated,” he said Tuesday. “Our goal is to convince everyone that now is the time. If we want to stop the Delta variant, now is the time.”

This year’s Met Gala motto is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. The hosts are Billie Eilish, Naomi Osaka, Amanda Gorman, and Timothée Chalamet, the honorary chairmen of fashion designer Tom Ford and Vogue boss Anna Wintour. Fans can probably expect to see mouth and nose guards in all variations. The fashion-conscious celebrities will probably not show themselves with simple FFP2 masks.
