On the occasion of her 40th birthday, Duchess Meghan launched a campaign called “40×40”. But her published video is panned by so many critics.
There she, the Duchess, sits at her spacious desk in her new home in Montecito, California. On the occasion of her 40th birthday, Meghan published a video on her “Archewell” website on Wednesday. It is a short rehearsed video call with actress Melissa McCarthy, who, when she notices that her camera is switched on, first throws herself into a supposedly typically British robe, rounded off with a large hat. Ascot calls – or just Montecito.
Duchess Meghan: “40×40” campaign should help women
Together with the “Gilmore Girls” star, Meghan has launched an action that she aptly calls “40×40”. 40 famous women – including Adele, Amanda Gorman and Princess Eugenie – offer themselves as mentors for 40 women who have stumbled professionally as a result of the pandemic. And they donate, exactly, 40 minutes of their time.
A nice chance to get tips or inspiration. Meghan’s critics, however, do not see the action as entirely positive. More precisely: The video is a thorn in the side of many. It is the first time the public has seen Prince Harry’s wife since she gave birth to daughter Lilibet Diana in June. She looks the same as always, around her neck she wears two necklaces with constellations of stars – one for son Archie and one for daughter Lili. Photos of the small family are well placed and visible to the camera. Her laptop is on the large oak desk in front of her. But not directly on the tabletop, but raised on a pile of books, or more precisely: editions of your children’s book “The Bench”. A bit of advertising on our own behalf.

Next to it is a typical English tea set from Harrods, from which Meghan occasionally drinks. It feels a bit like a very American ode to Great Britain. McCarthy with hat and tea, Meghan and her biscuits. And so the Meghan critics were not long in coming. Australian moderators Karl Stefanovic and Sophie Walsh wondered why Meghan couldn’t talk normally. They also made fun of the fact that Meghan quit her job at the Royals after a short time to help other women at work.
Prince Harry’s brief appearance in the video is also ridiculed by the two. At the end of the sketch with McCarthy, the prince can be seen in the background juggling in the garden of the house. “Harry has completely lost the thread,” they comment on the prince’s attempts to create a little comedy atmosphere.
