Ellen Barkin, actress and former partner of Johnny Depp, called him “controlling” and “jealous” in the trial with Amber Heard

Barkin said he was “always aware” of Depp drinking heavily during their relationship, adding, “I was drunk most of the time.” When asked if Depp was ever “out of control,” she cited the time she allegedly threw a bottle of wine across a hotel room during an argument with friends. The bottle was thrown in her direction, but did not hit her or anyone else, he said.

Barkin said it was “very common” for Depp to be “controlling” and “jealous,” allegations also made by Heard on the stand. Depp got angry and “demanding,” she testified. “He’s just a jealous man [y] controller, [y preguntaba] ‘Where are you going? Who are you going with? What did you do last night?” Barkin testified that he once had a scratch on his back, causing Depp to get “very angry” and insist that he was sleeping with someone else.

As for his relationship to the case, Barkin previously testified on Heard’s behalf in Depp’s 2020 libel suit against The Sun, in which the actor sued the British newspaper over its use of the term “wife beater” in a article about Heard’s abuse allegations. She testified that Depp was never physically abusive towards her, but said that he was verbally abusive and had violent episodes. Barkin also recounted the wine bottle incident. Depp called Barkin’s statement “false” in his testimony and said she had a “grudge” against him for not wanting to continue her relationship, according to Reuters.

Barkin’s statement comes after Heard ended her time on the stand on Tuesday, doubling down on allegations that Depp physically and sexually assaulted her. She also maintained that her opinion piece at the center of the trial is not about Depp, and only reflects her personal experiences after she was associated with domestic violence.

“He was talking about a bigger problem than Johnny,” Heard said, adding that he wanted to show that “when powerful men, in general, do something horrible…there is a system to clean up their mess.” Heard said she wrote the op-ed in the context of a “bigger phenomenon” amid the #MeToo movement.

Other witnesses called so far include Heard’s former makeup artist, Melanie Inglessiswho testified that he saw visible bruises and a split lip on Heard prior to her appearance on the show. james corden in 2016, and Heard’s sister, Whitney Henriquez, who testified that he saw Depp grab Heard by the hair and punch her in the face “repeatedly” during a fight. Heard’s legal team is expected to call Depp back to the stand this week.
