“Corsage” begins at Christmas 1877 – Elisabeth is 40 years old. The jubilee officially marks the empress, famous for her grace, as an old woman and throws her into a crisis. The leading role is played by the Luxembourgish actress Vicky Krieps.
Ernst Marischka’s famous “Sissi” trilogy (the film is written with a double S, note) laid the foundation for the cinematic legend 66 years ago, in which Romy Schneider starred in front of the camera as Elisabeth. The three-piece costume, which was anything but averse to kitsch, made the actress a star and has long been a fixture on Christmas television programs. Romy Schneider (1938–1982) never really enjoyed the success herself. She suffered from the “Sissi” image, the role stuck to her like semolina, she complained. She wanted to portray more than a childishly seductive aristocrat in a Heimatfilm melodrama. At the end of the 1950s, Schneider turned down a fourth film – despite a fee of millions.
